Born in italy and moved to dublin in the late 18th century pietro bossi developed and perfected the technique of inlaying scagliola.

An irish george iii white marble and scaliola chimneypiece attributed to pietro bossi circa 1780 the molded breakfronted rest above a freize inlaid with classical portrait medallions joined by husk draped swags the jambs headed by crossed berried branches over paneled foliate and crossed arrow pendants. Shelf width 1524 mm 60 in. An italian craftsman bossi worked in dublin from 1785 to 1798 and used coloured marble inlay and also a coloured paste inlay known as scagliola on a white marble ground. A compact neo classical chimneypiece carved in statuary and inlaid with verde antico green marble panels.

A late 18th century neoclassical english statuary marble chimneypiece inlaid with contrasting portoro nero marble circa 1795 with moulded shelf breaking forward and protruding ove. Opening height 889 mm 35 in. Not much is known about pietro bossi although much inlay work of the late 18th century is commonly known as bossi work. The moulded shelf above an inlaid faux fluted freize centred by a rectangular tablet applied with a drapery hung urn the corresponding faux fluted jambs with urn cappings on block feet. The central plaque depicts two carved seated winged griffons either side of a flaming urn two inlaid green marble panels either side. A statuary sienna marble and scagliola inlaid marble chimneypiece in the adam style. This very fine statuary marble and scagliola chimneypiece with inlaid neo classical designs is in the manner of pietro bossi. This technique has been replicated by ryan smith to produce this uniquely irish fireplace.

Overall height 1213 mm 47 in. Sienna marble interior slips 19th century. Depth of shelf 203 mm 8 in. The pure white italian statuary carrara marble body beautifully inlaid with multicoloured scagliola to form exquisite neo classical ornament.
